Building Bridges: Connecting Leadership and Teams For a Stronger Future

Claiming Your Seat: Disabled Voices in Politics

This workshop empowers Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, and disabled individuals to pursue leadership roles and public office through the power of self-advocacy and collective action. Participants will explore the history and impact of disability advocacy, including key milestones like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and learn why representation and self-advocacy in government are vital to driving systemic change.

The session will provide practical guidance on pathways to public office, campaign strategies, accessible communication, and coalition-building—showing how self-advocacy is the foundation for effective leadership and equitable policymaking.

Through real-world examples, interactive discussions, and action planning exercises, participants will identify personal leadership goals and discover national and disability-focused training programs, mentorship opportunities, and resources to strengthen their self-advocacy and leadership capacity. Videos, photos, and accessible materials will highlight successes of disabled leaders and provide inspiration, making this workshop a hands-on, engaging experience designed to help participants claim their seat at the table in public service.
